Belgard is where the Red Line splits in two. It opened on 30 September 2004 beside Katherine Tynan Road, close to the Belgard Heights estate, as an ordinary stop on a line that then ran only to Tallaght. In 2011 a new branch to Saggart was built, Belgard became the last stop on the common section, and it was rebuilt on a far larger scale to do the job, with a canopy covering the whole new structure.

It now has four platforms — two islands facing three tracks. The two outer faces work as a conventional through stop, and the middle track exists for the Saggart shuttle. In the early morning, in the evening and at weekends, every tram from the city centre goes to Tallaght, and the Saggart branch is worked by a separate service that turns back on that middle road, so a journey between Saggart and town at those hours is made in two parts. Beyond the platforms the trams run on another few hundred metres before the junction that separates the two branches.

Frequently asked questions

It is there for the Saggart shuttle. At quiet times all trams from the city centre run to Tallaght, and the Saggart branch is worked by a separate service that terminates on the centre road between the two island platforms, which is why the stop was given three tracks when it was rebuilt.

In 2011. Until then the Red Line ran only to Tallaght and Belgard was an ordinary intermediate stop; the new branch made it the junction and the stop was extensively rebuilt, gaining its four platforms and the canopy that covers them.

Belgard is a Luas tram stop on the Luas Red Line. Dublin has no metro and no underground railway: the Luas runs on the street. The nearest railway stations are a separate walk.
