Dublin fares: Luas, DART and commuter rail

What a journey costs by tram and train in Dublin, from the operators’ own published fares.

The fare that covers most journeys

Inside TFI Zone 1, which includes every Luas stop and the city-centre rail stations.

WhoTFI 90 Minute FareShort Fare
Adult€2.00€1.50
Young adult€1.00€0.75
Student€1.00€0.75
Child€0.65€0.65

One fare for 90 minutes of travel inside Zone 1: TFI Dublin, with as many changes as you like between Luas, DART, commuter rail, Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland. Tap on before and tap off after every Luas and rail leg. Pay with a Leap Card and you are charged one fare for 90 minutes of travel inside TFI Zone 1, however many times you change between Luas, DART, commuter rail and Dublin city buses. Tap on before and tap off after every tram and train leg.

The Short Fare is a cheaper rate on selected short journeys. On the Luas it applies to journeys of up to roughly three kilometres, but the operator does not publish which pairs of stops qualify, so we do not list them and neither should anyone else.

Daily and weekly caps

WhoDaily capWeekly cap (Mon–Sun)
Adult€6.00€24.00
Young adult€3.00€12.00
Student€3.00€12.00
Child€1.95€7.80

A cap is the most your Leap Card can be charged. Once you reach it the rest of the travel in that period costs nothing, although you must still tap on and off. The daily cap period starts at 04:30 and ends at 04:29 the next morning. The weekly cap period runs Monday 04:30 to the following Monday 04:29.

Once the cap is reached no more Travel Credit is taken for the rest of the period. Caps cover Luas, DART, commuter rail and Dublin City Bus (Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland) inside Zone 1. They do not cover Nitelink, tours or Go-Ahead Ireland commuter services.

Luas: cash tickets at the machine

Ticket1 zone2–8 zones
Adult single€2.00€2.60
Adult return€4.00€5.20
Child single€0.90€0.90
Child return€1.80€1.80

Paper tickets from the ticket vending machine at the stop (cash or card). Priced by the number of Luas fare zones crossed; Luas counts 8 zones across the two lines. The same prices apply on the Red and the Green Line.

We cannot tell you which zone a given stop is in. Luas prices cash tickets by its own count of 1 to 8 zones, but neither luas.ie nor Transport for Ireland publishes a stop-by-stop zone table or a zone map — the boundaries appear only on the ticket machine screen. Rather than guess, we quote the two prices and leave it there. There is no student or young adult price on a cash ticket.

Travelling without a valid ticket on the Luas is a standard fare notice of €100.00, reduced to €45.00 if it is paid within 14 days.

Zone 4 to the city centre€7.50€3.75

Inside Zone 1 a DART or commuter journey on a Leap Card is the same 90-minute fare as a tram or a bus, and the same caps apply. From further out it is priced by zone. If you use Leap Travel credit on Irish Rail Services to travel into Zone 1 your trip will be eligible for a free transfer in Zone 1 within 90 minutes.

An adult needs at least €2.50 of Travel Credit on the card to be let through the gate on an Iarnód Éireann service.

Which zone is my station in? The NTA publishes its Dublin zones only as a sketch map naming a few towns. Eleven stations are named on it and carry a zone on this site (Greystones, Kilcock, Kilcoole, Sallins and Naas and Skerries in Zone 2, Drogheda (MacBride), Enfield, Newbridge and Wicklow in Zone 3, Kildare and Rathdrum in Zone 4). For the rest we leave the zone blank rather than infer it, and there is no published station-to-station fare table to fall back on: Iarnód Éireann gives those only through the fare calculator on its own site.

Prepaid multimodal tickets (rail and commuter bus) bought in the TFI Leap Top-Up app; valid on TFI bus, train and Luas. Zone 1 “ticket” is the cap. Weekly versions of the same tickets run from €24.00 (Zone 1, which is simply the weekly cap) to €67.20 for Zones 1–4.

Through an employer, the Taxsaver multimodal ticket is €96.00 a month or €960.00 a year before tax relief, valid on Luas, DART, commuter rail and Dublin city buses. It is issued on a personalised Leap Card.

Transport for Ireland prints the Zones 1–3 weekly child price as €13.00, out of step with the prices either side of it. It is reproduced here as published and flagged as a probable error on the source page.

Who travels free or cheaper

Children under five travel free. Children aged five to eight also travel free, with a Child (5-8) TFI Leap Card, until the end of the month they turn nine. Children from nine to eighteen pay the child fare on a Child Leap Card.

Young adults — from nineteen until the end of the month of the twenty-fifth birthday — and students studying in Ireland pay half the adult Leap fare, with their own card. The Free Travel Pass is valid on all Luas services.

The full detail, including how to get each card and what happens if you lose it, is on the Leap Card page.

Frequently asked questions

With a Leap Card, €2.00 for an adult: the TFI 90 Minute Fare, which also covers a change onto the DART, a commuter train or a Dublin city bus within those 90 minutes. A paper ticket from the machine is €2.00 for one zone and €2.60 for two to eight zones.
Inside Zone 1 it is the same €2.00 Leap fare as the tram. From Zone 2 a Leap single into the city centre is €3.90, from Zone 3 €6.00 and from Zone 4 €7.50. Cash singles cost more.
Not by tapping a bank card on a gate: Dublin has no open-loop contactless on the Luas or on Irish Rail. You can pay for a Leap Card top-up or a paper ticket with a card, and the ticket machines take cards, but the travel itself is on a Leap Card or a ticket.
Yes, €6.00 a day for an adult and €24.00 over a Monday to Sunday week, shared across Luas, DART, commuter rail and Dublin city buses. The day runs 04:30 to 04:29, so a late night counts as the day before.
We read them from the operators’ own pages on 2026-10-20. The Luas prices come from the summary fares PDF still published on luas.ie, valid from 28 April 2025. Neither the NTA nor the operators had announced a revision when we checked.
