About Clonsilla
Clonsilla dates from 1 September 1848, lost its goods traffic on 17 June 1963, and then sat quietly until the Western Commuter service began in November 1981 — it was one of the four original stations on that service, alongside Leixlip Louisa Bridge, Maynooth and Ashtown. An upgrade in 2000 lengthened the platforms and gave it a new building; a second in 2012 added a footbridge and escalator, refurbished the building, resurfaced the platforms and built platform 3.
That third platform is why the station matters out of proportion to its size. The branch to M3 Parkway reopened on 2 September 2010 and leaves the main line just to the west, and platform 3 is where its shuttle trains sit. Two older pieces of railway survive nearby: the level crossing is still gate-operated, worked by a wheel in the signal cabin, and between here and Leixlip (Confey) a small red brick waiting room is all that is left of Lucan North, also known as Coldblow, which closed on 8 October 1941. The footbridge, incidentally, came second-hand from Listowel in County Kerry.

What is near Clonsilla
The station is just past the canal bridge on the main Clonsilla road, which puts it on the edge of the village with Blanchardstown and Lucan both a short bus ride away. Beech Park is the nearest named green space, about 280 m from the platforms. The Royal Canal runs alongside the line here, and its towpath gives a direct traffic-free walk or cycle in either direction — useful, because the station itself has no car park.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. It remains a gated crossing, opened and closed by a wheel in the signal cabin rather than by automatic barriers — an increasingly rare arrangement on a line carrying this many trains.
It is the waiting room of Lucan North station, also known as Coldblow, which closed on 8 October 1941. It stands on the bank between the tracks and the canal. The station building opposite it survives too, extended and renovated as a private house.
