About Beechwood
Beechwood stands on the site of a railway station that had a different name. Rathmines and Ranelagh was added to the Harcourt Street line in 1896 as an infill stop, put in because the Dublin tramways were growing in this part of the city, and it sat on an embankment south of Dunville Avenue with buildings on both platforms. Passengers crossed by an underpass lined in white tiles, of the same kind built at Lansdowne Road. Officially it was Rathmines & Ranelagh; everyone called it Ranelagh. Its timber platforms were replaced in concrete in 1943, and the whole line closed at the end of 1958, after which the buildings came down.
The Luas reached the site in 2004, and the name went to Ranelagh half a kilometre up the line, leaving this one to be called Beechwood — Coill na Feá. The rebuild was not a simple relaying of track: the bed was lowered by several metres, what was left of the underpass was demolished, and the line now crosses Dunville Avenue on the level. Two side platforms were laid out, with a small building on the site of the former ticket office that is let as a coffee shop and opens straight onto the northbound platform. In 2018 both platforms were lengthened from 45 to 55 metres for the longer trams. Southwards the line runs on to Cowper.

What is near Beechwood
This is a stop for the streets either side of Dunville Avenue rather than for any single destination, and almost everyone using it is walking to or from a house within a few minutes. Sandford Park School is about 330 m away and the Stella Cinema Ranelagh roughly 400 m, at the edge of what counts as walkable from the platforms. Otherwise the surroundings are red-brick terraces and the back gardens that the old railway embankment once ran between.

Frequently asked questions
A railway station called Rathmines and Ranelagh, opened in 1896 as an infill stop on the Harcourt Street line because of the growth of the Dublin tramways nearby. It had buildings on both platforms and a white-tiled underpass between them, and it closed with the rest of the line at the end of 1958.
During construction in the early 2000s the track bed was lowered by several metres, which also meant demolishing what remained of the old underpass. The result is that the trams cross Dunville Avenue on the level, where the railway had passed above it on an embankment.
