When the Green Line opened in 2004 it took over the formation of the Harcourt Street railway, closed since 1958, but Ranelagh was a genuinely new stop: the old line had no station at this spot. The one that carried the name Rathmines and Ranelagh stood further along the route, where Beechwood is now. Here the trams cross Ranelagh Road on a bridge whose steel deck was built in 2004 and dropped onto the stone abutments the railway had left behind, so the newest part of the structure sits on the oldest.

Ranelagh — Raghnallach in Irish — is also one of the few Luas stops with a building to speak of. A two-storey block on Ranelagh Road has a wide entrance under a name sign in the same style as those on the platforms, and inside there is little more than tiled steps up to both platforms, with a lift to the southbound side. Part of the ground floor is let as a retail unit and is in use as a restaurant. The platforms themselves are directly above the road, which is why the stop reads as a bridge from below and as an ordinary pair of platforms from above. The next call towards town is Charlemont, on its own bridge over the Grand Canal.
