Of all the stops on the inner part of the Luas Green Line, Cowper is the hardest to find if you do not already know it is there. It opened in 2004, on the stretch where the trams run on the disused railway alignment between Bray and Harcourt Street, and it was dropped in between the backs of houses rather than beside a road. Two entrances lead to the southern end of the platforms, one from Merton Road and one from Tudor Road, each of them a short tree-lined path; the Merton Road end is marked from the street by a solar-powered totem, which is the only sign most passers-by will see.

The name comes from Cowper Road nearby, which was named for William Cowper-Temple, 1st Baron Mount Temple (1811–1888), a former landowner in the district. He pronounced the name “cooper”; the stop is pronounced “cow-per”, and the announcements follow the stop rather than the baron. Southwards the line carries on towards Milltown and the Dodder.

What is near Cowper

There is very little at the platforms themselves: no shops, no car park and no road frontage, just the two footpaths in. Gonzaga College lies about 290 m away and accounts for a good share of the morning and afternoon traffic. Everything else within walking distance is housing, which is what makes Cowper quiet between the school peaks even though it sits on one of the busier parts of the line.

Frequently asked questions

From Cowper Road, a short distance away. The road takes its name from William Cowper-Temple, 1st Baron Mount Temple, who lived from 1811 to 1888 and formerly owned land in the area. The stop was named after the road rather than directly after him.

As “cow-per”, which is how the announcements and local usage have it. Curiously, Cowper-Temple himself pronounced the family name “cooper”, so the stop does not say the name the way the man it ultimately derives from did.
