Clondalkin and Fonthill train station
South Western Commuter · Cluain Dolcáin Cnoc an Fhuaráin · Dublin
About Clondalkin and Fonthill
The present station opened on 13 October 2008, the day after its predecessor closed. The old Clondalkin station stood less than a kilometre to the east at Cloverhill Industrial Estate and had a long and interrupted life: open from 4 August 1846, closed to passengers on 20 January 1947 and to goods that June, reopened on 16 May 1994 when the South Western Commuter service — then branded Arrow — began, and shut for good after the final train on 12 October 2008.
Its replacement sits on the R113, the stretch known as the Fonthill Road, west of Clondalkin between Ronanstown and the Nangor Road. It was given four through platforms, more than the service needed at the time, with some of them held back pending the completion of the Kildare Route Project that four-tracked the line. The naming has never quite settled: Irish Rail information screens call it Fonthill Road while the on-train announcements say Clondalkin and Fonthill. The Irish form is Cluain Dolcáin Cnoc an Fhuaráin.

What is near Clondalkin and Fonthill
The station sits on the Fonthill Road rather than in either of the places it is named after, with Clondalkin village some way east and Ronanstown and the Nangor Road either side. It is a road-dominated spot — dual carriageway, roundabouts, retail and industrial units — and the car park is the main approach for most passengers. Clondalkin’s old village centre, with its round tower, is the nearest thing to a destination, a bus ride or a long walk away.
Frequently asked questions
Because the operator’s systems do not agree. Irish Rail’s information screens show it as Fonthill Road, after the stretch of the R113 it stands on, while the automated announcements on board trains call it Clondalkin and Fonthill. Both refer to the same station.
It stood less than a kilometre east, at Cloverhill Industrial Estate, and had already closed once before — from January 1947 until the commuter service began in May 1994. It ran its last train on 12 October 2008 and the present station opened the next day.
