Park West and Cherry Orchard train station
South Western Commuter · An Pháirc Thiar agus Gort na Silíní · Dublin
About Park West and Cherry Orchard
The changeover here took a single night. The former Cherry Orchard and Parkwest station, originally just Cherry Orchard, had opened on 16 May 1994; it ran its last trains on 27 July 2008, was demolished later that year, and the present station a short distance away opened on 28 July 2008, the very next day. Both closures and openings were part of the Kildare Route Project, the four-tracking scheme that reshaped this whole stretch of railway.
The station stands in Ballyfermot on the Dublin to Cork main line, the old Great Southern and Western route, and serves the Park West business campus on one side and the Cherry Orchard area on the other. Only South Western Commuter trains call; the InterCity services for Cork, Limerick and the west run past. Automated announcements on board often shorten the name to Park West. The Irish form is An Pháirc Thiar agus Gort na Silíní.

What is near Park West and Cherry Orchard
The two halves of the name describe the two halves of the catchment: the Park West offices and campus on one side of the line, the housing of Cherry Orchard and Ballyfermot on the other. Cherry Orchard Park is about 340 m from the platforms. The Grand Canal and the Naas Road corridor are close by, and because much of the traffic is office workers arriving in the morning and leaving in the evening, the station is far quieter at weekends than on a weekday.

Frequently asked questions
The Kildare Route Project widened this stretch of line to four tracks, and the 1994 station could not be adapted. It closed on 27 July 2008 and was demolished, with the new station opening the following day a short distance away.
The automated announcements on Irish Rail trains shorten it. The full name, Park West and Cherry Orchard, covers both sides of the line — the business campus and the residential area — but Park West is what passengers usually hear on board.
