Grangegorman very nearly did not get a stop at all. When Luas Cross City was being planned, the intention was to leave a gap in the line here and make provision for a stop to be added later; the decision to build it after all came late in the development, and it opened with the rest of the extension in 2017.

It stands beside a Dublin Bus depot at Broadstone, with two edge platforms walled in on either side, and a single way in and out: a pathway leading from Grangegorman to one end of a platform. The campus it was built for, the main site of the Technological University Dublin, is immediately to hand, and the Mater Hospital is a longer walk away. Trams continue from here towards Phibsborough and Broombridge in one direction and Broadstone – University and the city centre in the other.
