Glencairn came into use in 2010, when the Green Line was pushed south beyond Sandyford to Brides Glen. It is a roadside stop on Murphystown Way, and its closest named neighbour is Glencairn House, the official residence of the British ambassador to Ireland, which stands close by.

What is on either side of it is more striking than the stop itself. Southwards the track keeps to a reserved strip at the edge of the road, running past housing. Northwards it leaves the road entirely, cutting through an otherwise undeveloped wooded area before crossing the M50 motorway on a bridge and carrying on towards Central Park. The Irish name is Gleann an Chairn, and the next call out of town is The Gallops.

Facilities

Park & RideNot at this stop

luas.ie publishes no facility list for individual Luas stops, so the only stop-level facts here are the Park & Ride and Cycle & Ride flags from the operator’s own stop data. Absence of a row is not evidence that something is missing.

What is near Glencairn

There is almost nothing built up immediately around the platforms. Glencairn itself, the house that gives the stop its name, is about 230 m away, and beyond it the ground to the north of the line is wooded and undeveloped as far as the motorway. Passengers here are drawn from the housing along Murphystown Way and the roads running off it rather than from any single destination.

Frequently asked questions

The official residence of the British ambassador to Ireland. It stands near the stop on Murphystown Way, and it is the landmark most often used to locate this part of the line, though the stop itself is an ordinary roadside pair of platforms.

Open ground. North of the platforms the line leaves the road and cuts through a wooded area that has not been built on, then crosses the M50 motorway on a bridge before reaching the business park at Central Park. It is one of the few genuinely rural-feeling stretches on the line.

Glencairn is a Luas tram stop on the Luas Green Line. Dublin has no metro and no underground railway: the Luas runs on the street. The nearest railway stations are a separate walk.
On a Monday to Thursday the first departure from Glencairn is about 05:44 and the last about 01:06, depending on line and direction. Saturday and Sunday start later. Nothing in Dublin runs through the night. The table above gives every line and direction separately.
