The NCI in the name is the National College of Ireland, whose main campus stands about 70 m from the platforms, and the stop was named for it when the Red Line was extended through the docklands in 2009. It occupies the middle of a tram lane on Mayor Street Lower, beside Mayor Square itself, between the student traffic of the college and the offices of the International Financial Services Centre.

That double job gives the stop an unusual rhythm for a Luas stop — a college term-time peak laid over the ordinary morning and evening office flows of the IFSC, in a district that was built, and is still being built, around the tram line rather than the other way round. The Irish name used on the signs and in the timetable data is Cearnóg an Mhéara, the square’s own name. Trams continue east from here towards The Point and west into the city centre.
