Saplings grow on the platforms at Cabra. The old railway cutting the stop occupies is wider than the stop needs, and the leftover strip behind one platform was planted with young trees in an attempt to offset some of the Luas’s carbon footprint; more were planted on the other platform. The stop opened in 2017 as part of Luas Cross City, the extension that took the Green Line from St. Stephen’s Green north to Broombridge.

It sits at the northern end of the Broadstone cutting, just beyond Connaught Street, which crosses the line on the Liam Whelan bridge — rebuilt while the stop was being constructed. The main way in is a long ramp from the eastern side of that bridge down to the middle of the southbound platform, with a flight of steps leading off halfway along it, and a second entrance is a path from the northern end of the stop into Mount Bernard Park. Besides Cabra itself, the stop serves the National Botanic Gardens, a walk to the east.

What is near Cabra

This is a residential part of the northside with its parks close at hand: Mount Bernard Park, which the stop has its own entrance onto, is about 270 m from the platforms, and Shandon Gardens Park roughly 280 m. Nothing else is mapped within 400 m. The National Botanic Gardens are the one destination people regularly ride here for, and otherwise the traffic is Cabra residents walking down to the cutting from the streets on either side.

Frequently asked questions

The cutting is wider than the stop, leaving a strip of unused ground behind one of the platforms. Saplings were planted there, and on the other platform, as an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint of the tram line.

It is the bridge carrying Connaught Street over the cutting, immediately south of the stop. It was rebuilt as part of the construction work, and the stop’s main entrance is a long ramp running down from its eastern side to the middle of the platform.
