Balally — Baile Amhlaoibh — opened in 2004 on the first stretch of the Green Line, and it is the stop for Dundrum Town Centre, the southern part of Dundrum and the neighbouring suburbs of Balally and Goatstown. It sits at the junction beside Overend Avenue, and its unusual feature is that it is open to the sky while the line is not: the platforms occupy an open box with cut-and-cover tunnel at either end. To the north-west the tracks run under the Rockfield Central apartment block and Overend Avenue; to the south-east they pass beneath an internal street and an office block.

That setting shapes the way in. The northbound platform has a staircase and a lift straight up to the street, while the southbound platform has steps and a ramp leading into a shopping mall built under the Rockfield development, so one side delivers you to the pavement and the other indoors. At street level the stop is marked by a solar-powered totem of the kind used at several other Green Line stops. The Park and Ride here holds 421 spaces, 9 of them for disabled badge holders, and is itself below ground, tucked beneath a second car park serving a housing development. Dundrum lies towards town, Kilmacud the other way.

What is near Balally

Retail dominates the short walk from the platforms. Dundrum Town Centre is about 370 m away, with a TK Maxx at roughly 180 m and a Marks & Spencer at 320 m closer in, so a good share of journeys here are shopping trips rather than commutes. Ashfield College lies about 190 m off. Beyond the centre and the office blocks above the tunnels, the catchment is suburban housing on both sides of the line.

Frequently asked questions

Because buildings were put over the alignment. On one side the tracks pass in cut-and-cover tunnel under the Rockfield Central apartment block and Overend Avenue, on the other beneath an internal street and an office block. The stop itself was left as an open box between the two, which is why it feels enclosed while still being open to the sky.

Below ground, beneath another car park that serves a housing development, with 421 spaces of which 9 are reserved for disabled badge holders. It is one of the few places on the line where the parking is stacked rather than spread out beside the tracks.
