Salthill and Monkstown train station
DART · Cnoc an tSalainn agus Baile na Manach · Dublin
About Salthill and Monkstown
The original station here opened in May 1837, built by the Dublin and Kingstown Railway and called simply Salthill. It closed in 1960, and when it came back in 1984, electrified for the DART, it did so under the longer name it carries today, taking in Monkstown just inland as well as Salthill on the coast. The Irish form is Cnoc an tSalainn agus Baile na Manach.
It is an unstaffed station with a frank list of what it does not have: no toilets, no wi-fi and no enclosed waiting room, though there are several passenger shelters on both sides of the track, two ticket machines and a night gate that is opened in the evening. A vending machine that once stood in the building has been taken out. The car park is run by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council rather than by the railway, with 100 spaces, cash payment and daytime opening Monday to Saturday. The nearest bus stops are in Monkstown village, less than 300 m away. Seapoint and Dun Laoghaire (Mallin) are the calls either side.
