When Pelletstown took its first passengers on 26 September 2021, at a ceremony with the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, it was the first entirely new station on the Iarnród Éireann network since Oranmore in 2013. It had been a long time coming: permission was first granted in 2014, modified in 2018, and although construction was meant to start in 2019 the ground was not broken until February 2020. The projected cost in early 2020 was between €10 million and €10.5 million.

The station sits on the bank of the Royal Canal in the Cabra area, next to the 8th Lock residential quarter, and its footbridge does double duty: as well as joining the platforms it lets walkers and cyclists cross between Royal Canal Avenue and Ashington Park. The name comes from the townland, and it is an old one — Piletiston appears on the Close Roll of King Edward III around 1375, recorded as the settlement of Ralph Pedelowe. In Irish the station is Baile Pheiléid.

What is near Pelletstown

Everything here is new except the canal. The station serves the apartment blocks and houses built along Royal Canal Avenue and the 8th Lock quarter, with Ashington Park about 130 m away on the far side of the footbridge. The towpath runs past the platforms and gives a traffic-free route into the city in one direction and out towards Ashtown in the other, which is how a good share of passengers arrive.

Frequently asked questions

From the townland of the same name, which is medieval. The form Piletiston is recorded on the Close Roll of King Edward III around 1375, and is understood to mean the settlement of a man called Ralph Pedelowe. The Irish name of the station is Baile Pheiléid.

Yes. The footbridge that links the two platforms is also a public crossing, connecting Royal Canal Avenue on one side with Ashington Park on the other. Pedestrians and cyclists can use it to get round the Royal Canal without going out to a road bridge.

Pelletstown is an Iarnód Éireann railway station, served by Western Commuter. It is not a metro station — Dublin has no metro.
On a Monday to Thursday the first departure from Pelletstown is about 05:33 and the last about 23:48, depending on line and direction. Saturday and Sunday start later. Nothing in Dublin runs through the night. The table above gives every line and direction separately.
The NTA publishes its Dublin fare zones only as a sketch map naming a few towns, and this station is not one of them, so we do not state a zone for it. What we can say is how the fares work: see the Leap Card guide and the fares page.
