No date is recorded for the first trains at Wicklow, but the station has the look and the equipment of the nineteenth-century Dublin and South Eastern Railway throughout. It has two platforms and a passing loop, with a typical DSER signal cabin perched on the footbridge and a bridge on a curve at the Dublin end. It is one of the few stations on this stretch of line that is staffed full-time.

The signalling changed within living memory. Semaphore signals and electric train staff working, used all the way from here to Rosslare Europort, were taken out of service in April 2008, and the line now runs under the mini-CTC system controlled from Dublin. The main building is on platform 1, with a waiting room and toilets beside the ticket office and a machine nearby; platform 2’s waiting room is out of use, replaced by a covered shelter. There is a pay-and-display car park for eighty vehicles and a bicycle area. The Irish name is Cill Mhantáin.

What is near Wicklow

Station Road is about ten minutes’ walk from the centre of Wicklow town and from the marina, so the station serves the town properly rather than from a distance. Wicklow County Council’s offices are roughly 320 m from the platforms. Beyond the town the harbour, the Murrough shoreline and the Wicklow mountains are all within easy reach, and the station is a common starting point for walkers heading inland towards Glendalough.

Frequently asked questions

A signal cabin of the type the Dublin and South Eastern Railway used, set on the footbridge over the tracks. It is a survivor from the era when this line was worked by semaphore signals, which ceased here in April 2008 when control passed to the mini-CTC system in Dublin.

It has been taken out of use. Passengers on that side now have a covered shelter instead, while the waiting room, toilets and ticket office remain in the main building on platform 1, which is where the staffed side of the station is.

Wicklow is an Iarnód Éireann railway station, served by South Eastern Commuter. It is not a metro station — Dublin has no metro.
On a Monday to Thursday the first departure from Wicklow is about 06:30 and the last about 23:00, depending on line and direction. Saturday and Sunday start later. Nothing in Dublin runs through the night. The table above gives every line and direction separately.
