Among the quieter calls on the Luas Green Line, Windy Arbour opened in 2004 on the original run from St Stephen’s Green out to Sandyford. It lies in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and covers three districts at once — Windy Arbour itself, Churchtown and Clonskeagh — none of which it sits in the middle of, which is the usual condition of the stops on this stretch of segregated track.

The platforms occupy the spot where a footbridge once crossed the railway, between Churchtown Road Lower and St. Columbanus’ Road, and there is an entrance from each of those roads. They are not alike. The Churchtown Road side has a layby that cars and buses can pull into to set passengers down, which makes it the practical drop-off point; the St. Columbanus’ Road side is a paved plaza running from a bend in the road to the northern end of the platforms, and is the pedestrian way in. The stop carries the Irish name Na Glasáin. Southwards the line climbs on towards Dundrum.

What is near Windy Arbour

The immediate surroundings are residential on both sides of the line, and the two entrances pull from different directions rather than from one centre. Glasson Court Park, about 330 m away, is the only named open space within easy reach of the platforms. Most journeys from here start at a front door a few minutes’ walk off, and the layby on the Churchtown Road side handles the rest.

They are quite different. The Churchtown Road entrance is a layby that cars and buses can use to drop passengers off. The St. Columbanus’ Road entrance is a paved plaza leading from a bend in the road to the northern end of the platforms, and is the better one to walk to.
